excursionS - EAST CRETE

KNOSSOS & HERAKLION

Travel back in time when you visit Knossos, probably the most important archaeological site on Crete. You will learn about the fascinating history and culture of the Minoan civilization. After walking in the footsteps of the Minoans around this fabulous palace which dates back over 4000 years, take a chance to visit the museum in the centre of Heraklion, the capital of Crete, or catch up on some shopping! A full day out.

LASITHI & DIKTI CAVE

Not too far away from coastal areas on the East Side of Crete are the Dikti mountains encompassing the Lassithi plateau. The day out takes in traditional villages, a beautiful monastery, and of the course the Dikti cave which is believed to be the birth place of Zeus. Plenty of sights and photo opportunities, with history and tradition and and myth all thrown into the mix.

SPINALONGA

A great day out sailing across from Elounda to the famous island of Spinalonga, more popular these days thanks to the book The Island by Victoria Hislop. The island hosts the ruins of a Venetian Fortress, and within its walls the remains of the village where the Leper lived up to the mid 1950s. Then sailing on to the next destination where there is time to relax and enjoy a barbeque. Then sailing on to the town of Aghios Nikolaos for chance to have coffee by the lake.

CHRISSI ISLAND

A taste of paradise off the south east coast of Crete. Sail across to the island for perfect chill out time on the beach, dipping into the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea. This is the perfect day out to top up that tan and have complete relaxation surrounded by nature and beauty!

SAMARIA GORGE

Europe's longest gorge and now a National Park since 1962. The Gorge entrance is just past Omalos, a village in the White Mountains on west Crete. The day is full of stunning natural beauty, and a little bit of history at the abandoned village of Samaria itself. Top up your water bottles from the natural springs, and at the end of the walk, have a refreshing dip in the Libyan Sea on the South West coast of Crete, before sailing along to coast to meet the transfer back. Walking Boots, Sports Shoes or good walking sandals are a must as this day out is a trek.
